Am I the only one who thinks it's facepalm worthy that they feel the need to advertise one brand of ginger ale as containing real ginger by calling it "a nice surprise"? What the hell else would be in it?!

I either need to get more or less cynical.

Canada Dry, the most common ginger ale in Canada:

Carbonated Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Sodium Benzoate (Preservative)Caramel Color

Ginger?

I assume it's covered under "natural flavors", and I looked on my can to check. Still eyebrow raising.

Yeah, but natural flavors could mean anything, including "chemicals which are by definition derived from natural substances at some point that happen to taste like ginger."

This is oddly appropriate given that my Science, Myth and Society class today was about just what "natural" means. I'm of the opinion that for the most part it's a bogus designation that can easily be stretched to stuff like all natural asbestos.

My faith in the food industry is pretty lackluster as is, but this in particular strikes me as strange. I'm also the type that when they use the phrase "Now with real X!" goes "... And what were you feeding us before?"
