Lovely Day / Breathe In by DJ N7F

One of the ways I've been amusing myself is learning more about DJing, especially making mashups. I think this is the best one I've done so far, and the songs just went together so perfectly that it was uncanny. I've been using this software and I'm starting to get the hang of it. Just reading manuals for software usually doesn't do it, I need to get down and play with it.

Also, this isn't just syncing them so the beats match (that's part of it) but deciding which parts to emphasize, so that's taken some practice.

And yeah, the DJ name is a Mass Effect reference. DJ N7 was taken, so I decided on N7F (the F standing for female).

What's that? That's right, it's time again for the annual

End of the Year Music Mix

And this one is special since I'm now out of college!

So without further ado, under the cut:

So, here it is, my last radio show recording. I'm not ashamed to admit that I teared up a little a few times.

I got utterly tongue-tied when I tried to say "blues royalty", tried again and ended up saying "blues loyalty". Oh well.

I also completely forgot to thank the guys at OC Remix for The Missingno Tracks, since that's the background music when I'm talking.

Holy shit, is that a radio show that didn't have any technical problems? Why yes, it is!

The only error was that I referred to Neil Young as being southern rock... and he's Canadian. But really, how many 22 year olds know that? I also referred to Augustana the same way even though they're from California, but they do have a southern sound.

I'm DJing a school event tomorrow. I'm excited, but the one downside is that I have to be there by 8:30 in the morning. Urgh. But (allegedly) all I have to bring is my laptop and don't have to lug any equipment there.

It occurred to me I should probably have a DJ name. I'm planning on wearing my Mass Effect N7 hoodie since it's supposed to be chilly, but DJ N7 is taken, but DJ N7F (the F, of course, referring to me being female) doesn't appear to be. The F could also refer to the fact that the female Shepard character from Mass Effect is called FemShep by a lot of people, including her voice actress.

I also went to the station yesterday and procured some of our top 40 songs for use at this event, since that's probably what people want to hear and I don't have many of those on my harddrive for the most part. It's not that I'm trying to be a hipster or anything, I just don't really listen to mainstream radio and don't really know what's popular. It's a fun run, so I figure upbeat songs will probably work best, along with some rock and roll, of which I have a decent amount. There will also be some of the freshman parents there, so I've included some of the classic rock for them.

And unless someone tells me not to, I'm totally playing "Princes of the Universe" at this event. Also, unless someone specifically requests it, no Katy Perry songs. If they ask I'll do it, but I'm not playing any of those willingly.

I'm also debating whether it's worth asking the school to reimburse me for buying an MP3 of the version of the Star Spangled Banner as sung by Whitney Houston, which the organizers specifically requested. It was only $1.29, but still. They could always just buy me a soda and we'll call it even.

I've been on Neil Young kick lately, so I was (quietly) singing along to "Heart of Gold" near the end of the day at work, and when I got to the "And I'm gettin' old" part one of the guys I work with gave me a sour look and said (jokingly) "You're not old! Only old coots like me get to sing that part!"

He then said that he was actually glad to see a young person who knew who Neil Young was, and when I showed him that I had more of his music on my MP3 player he said "Excellent!" and complimented me on my taste. When I said my dad had given me that album he then said that my dad has good taste too, and that my parents must've raised me well since I appreciate good music.

He also really liked the photos I have of the Cape on my desk, and he though that picture of Mom on the deck of the lobster boat was really nice and that he could see the resemblance between us. Nice guy, and when he saw me looking at the photos of his border collie that he has on his desk several months ago he emailed me to an online gallery of them after I said we used to have one.

Pet Shop Boys - Home And Dry by andie_ba

This is quickly becoming my favorite Pet Shop Boys song. I'm not quite sure what it is about the composition, but it just works. Maybe because it manages to capture a really complex emotion.

I also had two characters of my characters basically tell me that this is their theme song. Insistently.

And sadly I've had lots of ideas, but haven't made much progress on said story. But it's better than being completely idea-less.

Since I finished Puella Magi Madoka Magica last night and am not at all reactionary I put a mix together.

So yeah, spoilers, even if I don't go into detail. If you've been watching and haven't seen the end, don't click this unless you want to be spoiled. ^_^;

Major spoilers, I warned you )

The Script

One of my favorite new bands from the last few years are these guys, The Script, and this is among my favorites off of their new album. I read a review that said that their lyrics tend to be about deeper stuff than a lot of pop music out there, and one thing I've noticed is that they really get heartbreak and desperation, both of which are really evident in this one.

The Script - Nothing - Official Video found on Pop

Another thing I find interesting is that several of their songs (especially "For the First Time") have to do with economically hard times, and considering they're from Ireland I wonder if it's a cultural thing (I actually found an interview where they said that they specifically wrote one song about the recession). I also remember thinking that they sound a bit like The Police, and probably have some of the same influences.

They're also a band I like because you can hear how they improved between their first and second albums, and I love to hear a group's sound evolve.

This week's radio show. I also found out that a kid I went to high school who is now in Seattle was listening, so that was cool since I haven't seen him in a long time. I'm also glad I thought to put up that I was doing the show on Facebook.

I don't know why, but the audio on the recording dropped out a couple times during songs, and I didn't notice during the actual show. So I pulled an Orwell and replaced the audio. I did not, however, edit out the part where I talked into the wrong mic for about 10 seconds because I thought it was funny and I try to maintain a certain level of self deprecation.

Edit: Put up a second version of the show since I found one bit where the music went out and I hadn't noticed. My voice also went out at one point, so I think it might have been the recording computer that did it, but I just left it.

Edit 2: D'oh, I accidentally cut out one of the transitions. Oh well, too late now. In case anyone's wondering, after Cycle it's Illustrated Man by Johnny Winter and then Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John.

Last week's radio show. I only remember as I was putting together the playlist for this week.

I have some stuff I intended to put on, but now I just turned iTunes on shuffle to see what pops up. The first one was Bonnie Raitt, so this might just work.

This song has been stuck in my head all WEEK. It's crack, but it wormed it's way into my head.

Speaking of this song, I had my radio show on Wednesday and made an MP3 recording of it, which is available here. One of the input cords is failing on us so the volume is way lower than it should be (the volume also jumps up a couple times on the recording as I was trying to correct it as I was broadcasting), but I amplified it as much as I could when I got home. It's still not as loud as I'd like, but it's a bit better. I also talk over the start of one song because I didn't hit pause hard enough and the screwy input means I didn't realize I was talking over it, but I just went with it.

Well, I'll be damned, I found a song by Katy Perry I can stand.

But before you think I've had a change of heart, here's the catch: She's not singing it. Someone with talent is, a guy from a group called Boyce Avenue.

I first found these guys through Pandora, and my reaction was to think "Oh, this is pretty song!" followed a few seconds later by "Wait a second, isn't this Linkin Park?" and after some more research I fell in love. They also did a cover of Fast Car that does the original justice.

Guh... Sting, why are you so good? This whole album is excellent, but this one just gives me chills.

It's that time of year again, folks, when I go through my data and try to figure out just what I was listening to month by month so I can assemble them here. I got the original idea from [ profile] jyuufish and this is fourth year I've done it for those keeping track.

I decided that my show this week is going to be all queer artists, and I mean all of the LGBT spectrum. I'm also recording it.

Tune in Here

And since I just wrapped up one paper draft, here's a meme:

1. Put your iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc. on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
4. Have Fun!
