My best guess is it's whatever was in the pre-configured seasoning packet that threw the mix off, because everything else you added should have gotten along fine together. I don't know your tastes, but a little bit of oregano in there might have added some good flavour without mucking with the balance. :) (Or slicing up some fresh scallions. -always teh yum with chicken.)
Your comment about "Mother and Child reunion" made me think of when I worked at a restaurant and when all of us servers would order our breakfast I'd get an omelet with grilled chicken on it. Which would gross out a number of the other staff who viewed me as morally devoid for eating the Mother and Child at the same time... >.> (I think that's silly tho, they should stop eating veal and lamb before they can be bothered about something like that.) heh.
