All I need is the air I breathe and a place to rest my head

Remind me not to make self-congratulatory posts before things are actually over.

By which I mean the plan today got FUBARed on account of the woman who was going to drive me coming down with the flu and me decided that it was too risky, so it's pushed back until tomorrow and via another friend of mine.

But in case this too gets FUBARed I managed to solve the biggest problem with leaving Ryu here in the apartment, mainly water, through a little last-minute engineering. She's gained enough weight back that she can survive not eating for two weeks (and it helps that what I've been giving her is specifically intended to build up her fat reserves) but she absolutely needs water and there won't be people here to refill it.

So I did a search for self-filling water bowls to see if any were being sold nearby, and I more or less bastardized the basic design using what I had on hand. And so:

It more or less operates by gravity and the bottle stands up by its own weight, and though you can't see it there's a bit I cut out of the bottle under the water so it will flow into the bowl. When the water level in the bowl goes down water will come out the bottle to replenish it, but due to the way water pressure works it won't go any higher. I added the duct tape to hold it up, but it seems pretty secure.

I also called the vet in a panic and she instructed me how to lower the temperature just enough that her metabolism will slow down but not enough that she'll get sick again. So while leaving her alone isn't ideal it's now doable.

So yeah. *flop* Either way we're good, more or less.

Hamster bottle wouldn't work?

Protip: use more duct tape to prevent gecko squish.

She wouldn't be able to get water from a hamster bottle, she's too low to the ground.

And if I do have to leave her here I will secure it extra-tight, this was more of a test to see if it would work. It's also backed into the corner of the tank so there isn't much tension on the tape itself.

If you keep drinking the water, does it keep flowing out of the bottle? I would think that at some point the vacuum at the top would prevent more water from flowing out?

Apparently when the water level gets below the lip air goes up into the bottle and the top. It's more or less how a water cooler works. I can't quite explain the physics behind it, but it works.

Why does it have my name? ._0!!

She's not intentionally named after you, and while I can't recall exactly when I got her (sometime between 6th and 8th grade) it was before I was really active on the internet, so it's more of a coincidence. I just named her that because I think she looks like a dragon.

I know I was joking around. :-D Oh that's good. Btw, nice temporary fix until you get an auto-dispensing bottle. :-)
