Political logic (or lack thereof)
Oct. 9th, 2006 07:12 pmI tend to lean towards centrist politically, but the current political situation has me siding with the Democrats even though I can't vote until next year. Right now I'm amused by the governor's race in my home of Massachusetts, especially how the Republican candidate Kerry Healey has no tact IMHO and is trying to "redeem" herself. Aside from the fact that she's basically the current governor, who also in my opinion has driven us deeper into a hole, minus the smile. I say "no tact" because she started playing negative ads before the Democratic primary was even over. And she refuses to address the independent candidates who, in all frankness, have no chance of winning, but just as a matter of respect she should have. That didn't motivate me in the least to change sides and vote for her. And I just plain don't like her.
John Keller, a reporter who's had a few good lines this time around, had a great line about Deval Patrick the Democratic candidate which is both true and funny:
"With a month to go, it sure looks like this is a year when the voters want change wrapped up in a fresh but comfortably non-frightening package, preferably one with the same last name as the saint who drove the snakes out of Ireland."
Ouch. Very pointed. Now I'm amused that she's trying to be all nicey in her new ads after getting blasted for adding racial undertones to them (since Deval Patrick is black) and touting how he's defended rapists and criminals.
Newsflash: He was a defense attorney. If he didn't defend those guys he'd be a pretty crappy attorney, and I personally admire defense attornies greatly for doing a job most people won't touch. If anything that makes me want him to be governor more. I think the damage is done for Kerry Healey, as she's down something like 25% and in my opinion can only go down now that she's been revealed as a snarky tactless person. Or so I hope.
