So, here it is, my last radio show recording. I'm not ashamed to admit that I teared up a little a few times.

I got utterly tongue-tied when I tried to say "blues royalty", tried again and ended up saying "blues loyalty". Oh well.

I also completely forgot to thank the guys at OC Remix for The Missingno Tracks, since that's the background music when I'm talking.

What's this? An MP3 of today's show? Why yes, it is!

And man, my voice sounds really bad. I can't believe I've still got remnants of this illness two weeks later.

Here ya go

MP3 of today's radio show! (right click to download or click to stream) The only major technical problem was that someone had messed up the Flash on out recording computer's version of Chrome (don't ask how, I'm still trying to figure that out) so I had to record off of IE instead. I also made a conscious effort to avoid saying "Um" since I noticed I was doing that a lot last week.

I cannot believe how early I'm getting tired these days. Considering what a nightowl I am that says something.

Holy shit, is that a radio show that didn't have any technical problems? Why yes, it is!

The only error was that I referred to Neil Young as being southern rock... and he's Canadian. But really, how many 22 year olds know that? I also referred to Augustana the same way even though they're from California, but they do have a southern sound.

DJ N7F?

I'm DJing a school event tomorrow. I'm excited, but the one downside is that I have to be there by 8:30 in the morning. Urgh. But (allegedly) all I have to bring is my laptop and don't have to lug any equipment there.

It occurred to me I should probably have a DJ name. I'm planning on wearing my Mass Effect N7 hoodie since it's supposed to be chilly, but DJ N7 is taken, but DJ N7F (the F, of course, referring to me being female) doesn't appear to be. The F could also refer to the fact that the female Shepard character from Mass Effect is called FemShep by a lot of people, including her voice actress.

I also went to the station yesterday and procured some of our top 40 songs for use at this event, since that's probably what people want to hear and I don't have many of those on my harddrive for the most part. It's not that I'm trying to be a hipster or anything, I just don't really listen to mainstream radio and don't really know what's popular. It's a fun run, so I figure upbeat songs will probably work best, along with some rock and roll, of which I have a decent amount. There will also be some of the freshman parents there, so I've included some of the classic rock for them.

And unless someone tells me not to, I'm totally playing "Princes of the Universe" at this event. Also, unless someone specifically requests it, no Katy Perry songs. If they ask I'll do it, but I'm not playing any of those willingly.

I'm also debating whether it's worth asking the school to reimburse me for buying an MP3 of the version of the Star Spangled Banner as sung by Whitney Houston, which the organizers specifically requested. It was only $1.29, but still. They could always just buy me a soda and we'll call it even.

Finally!

Guess what I have?

A passable radio show recording!

It only took me four weeks. :P But hey, now I have one I can present without being ashamed. I did swap out the music files with clean ones just because there's slight distortion when you record them off the soundcard, but now it's good.

D'oh!

So, good news is that the computer recording my radio show worked perfectly, the bad news is that the human operating it (read: me) is an idiot and saved the show to a flash drive that didn't have enough space, so all I managed to get was the intro and two minutes of the first song. And I didn't save a backup copy.

I'll try again next week. The sound of my hand slapping my forehead when I realized what I'd done was loud enough that it echoed. I should also adjust the settings on Audacity to save a second copy to the local disk automatically just to further idiot-proof it.

And here's the show.

It was actually fortunate that I didn't have anyone listening today besides me recording it so I could fix some stuff in post. I took out some fuckups but also left a few in because they're funny. For instance the first version of "Creep" I played contained the F-word, so I stopped it, apologized, played another song and found a clean version on YouTube (which I switched out in post because of crappy audio quality). For this version I dubbed something in over the offending swear (not saying what here).

Edit: Never mind, the "clean" version is not in fact clean, it was apparently mislabeled. Oh well, it's not on the air so I can't get in trouble for it anyway, and the version I did play on the air was clean. My perfectionism bites me in the ass again.

I also accidentally said "Leppelins of Zed" when introducing the last song since at that point I was running on empty, but the audio was too distorted so I had to cut it. I think it was an entertaining slip up.

This week's radio show. I also found out that a kid I went to high school who is now in Seattle was listening, so that was cool since I haven't seen him in a long time. I'm also glad I thought to put up that I was doing the show on Facebook.

I don't know why, but the audio on the recording dropped out a couple times during songs, and I didn't notice during the actual show. So I pulled an Orwell and replaced the audio. I did not, however, edit out the part where I talked into the wrong mic for about 10 seconds because I thought it was funny and I try to maintain a certain level of self deprecation.

Edit: Put up a second version of the show since I found one bit where the music went out and I hadn't noticed. My voice also went out at one point, so I think it might have been the recording computer that did it, but I just left it.

Edit 2: D'oh, I accidentally cut out one of the transitions. Oh well, too late now. In case anyone's wondering, after Cycle it's Illustrated Man by Johnny Winter and then Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John.

Oh hai

I have a sinus headache and suspect that something I'm allergic to has started to bloom, but have a radio show.

Something also smells like nail polish and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I wonder if something spilled somewhere.

Last week's radio show. I only remember as I was putting together the playlist for this week.

I have some stuff I intended to put on, but now I just turned iTunes on shuffle to see what pops up. The first one was Bonnie Raitt, so this might just work.

Here's an MP3 of today's radio show, and once again I had to do a full audio replace on the songs because the people before me are fucking idiots who never leave the equipment set up properly. But it's all good, and I tried out a few new things this time.
athenaltena: (sleep)
I had the second of two Japanese quizzes this week, and I think I did pretty well. I know I screwed up two similar words, but the rest seemed fine.

I didn't wind up recording my radio show this week because I had to restart the server halfway through due to the people before me being extremely idiotic. Every week since they've gotten a show it's been blatantly obvious that they have no goddamn idea what they're doing, the mics are up to maximum and pointing the wrong way, they let the station go to dead air (a big no no) and I'm pretty sure they were responsible for the server needing to be restarted, since I couldn't submit any program information, and us listing what songs we play are kind of how the artists get the royalties for us playing their music, so it's, y'know, kind of important.

After I got it working again I didn't feel much like talking, since about the same time I did the server restart I went from feeling okay to feeling awful, so I went home immediately after and spent the rest of the day lying around in my pajamas. Luckily it doesn't seem I'm getting sick, which was what I was afraid of since one of Angelo's friends discovered she had a fever yesterday while she was up here. But it looks like I'm fine.

I've also been playing Pokemon Diamond on an emulator for most of today. Also totally worth it. I never actually owned a GameBoy or a DS or anyone of those as a kid or played the games, so I'm making up for lost time. My Shinx evolved into a Luxio! Yes I'm a dork, you don't need to tell me. Also Pokemon names are a really good way to practice katakana. I discovered that when I was looking something up (I have trouble remembering what element is weak to what).

In today's show, I tell DOMA it is a discriminatory piece of crap that won't be missed with Steam, congratulate Rufus Wainwright on his baby daughter, and Trololo and Rickroll the audience. Good times. I did more or less a full audio replace because the recording was distorted as hell for a reason I'm not sure of.

This song has been stuck in my head all WEEK. It's crack, but it wormed it's way into my head.

Speaking of this song, I had my radio show on Wednesday and made an MP3 recording of it, which is available here. One of the input cords is failing on us so the volume is way lower than it should be (the volume also jumps up a couple times on the recording as I was trying to correct it as I was broadcasting), but I amplified it as much as I could when I got home. It's still not as loud as I'd like, but it's a bit better. I also talk over the start of one song because I didn't hit pause hard enough and the screwy input means I didn't realize I was talking over it, but I just went with it.

Got my radio show going 3-4pm and (hopefully) all the equipment working.

For your listening pleasure. I'll also have an MP3 later.

I took the recording and fixed some minor issues (the songs dropping out at some point due to internet lag, a couple of my pauses and "uhs" while talking, the click of the microphone turning on, and my wrap up because it got horribly distorted in the recording, so it just goes straight to the last song) and now it's ready for public consumption.

I'm very proud of this, and I'm glad to I decided to do it.

So here's the download link, using a new system, and hopefully it'll work:

Linky

I also mention in the recording that I intentionally tried to pick happy and or/hopeful sounding songs, because I figured the last thing I wanted to do was pick a whole bunch of "oh woe is me!" songs by queer artists. There is one exception, but that's because that group doesn't really write any positive songs!
