Oct. 13th, 2006 09:48 pmWell, in the Massachusetts governor's race all Hell has somewhat broken loose. Democrat Deval Patrick's brother in law was sighted in several newspapers as not having registered as a sex offender in this state for an assault on his wife 12 years ago. The two have reconciled and live happily with their children now, but that's not the problem.
I have absolutely no doubt that this was an attack on Patrick. The Republican candidate Kerry Healey has repeatedly and tactlessly sighted his history as a defense attorney and claimed him to be "soft on crime" which in my humble opinion is BS since it was his job to defend criminals and make sure they have fair trials. In my opinion that's an honorable career to have and not a venue for attack. Healey obviously thinks differently. I think in Massachusetts we are used to mud slinging, but bringing someone's family into it crosses a line and I feel Patrick was justified to respond the way he did. I cannot honestly see how without Healey's intervention on some level this could have gotten to the press. Whatever fragments of sympathy I've had for Healey have dissolved at this point. I can't respect someone like her and sure as hell don't want them as governor.
Hang in there Deval, I think he's taken a very mature stance so far and I hope Healey ruins herself. I hate to say it, but Massahusetts cannot afford another governor like her. I think Patrick is right that this needs to stop.
