Back in Boston + other stuff
Oct. 13th, 2009 10:20 pmColumbus Day weekend was relaxing (and shows the true meaning of the words darkness and quiet in a city where neither truly exists) but now I'm back in Boston with the usual stuff.
Also, glad I wasn't here when the Sox got kicked out of the playoffs. Though at least they didn't lose to the Yankees, or my neighborhood would be a smoking crater.
It's also gotten very chilly, so I might just bust out the electric blanket for tonight. I think it's all the wet from this weekend and the changing weather. I was freezing in Diversity Services today, mostly my arms, and it had actually warmed up by then. It's supposed to be in the 50s for the rest of this week with some rain, so I'll get plenty of use out of my sword umbrella. That is, an umbrella with a handle that looks like a katana (would link to the site but it appears to be down).
Someone from a class I was in last year saw me the other day and asked me if I was seriously carrying a sword around, and I said of course not, I left the actual swords at home. And no, I'm not joking. They're sitting on the other side of my bedroom door at the moment, though they're a shinai and and bokken respectively and I don't have any metal ones... yet.
And a trip to Sears with my parents got me new clothes for my new job, which is good because the last thing I want to do is show up looking ratty, especially since this place is in a very nice building with fancy turnstiles in front of the elevators like in a train station (or something like that, terminology is probably off). The view is also amazing from the floor I'm on and I might be able to use the gym in the basement, which in a funny coincidence is one floor below the room I was in last year for one college course since Suffolk has a few rooms in that building. It also means I have one less trip I have to take on the T per day since Suffolk itself is right there, so it all worked out.
In terms of clothes, it turns out that Sears doesn't subscribe to the whole "frilly stuff is in" ideology of other major clothing stores, which is a relief because frills do not work on me. Jen also agreed with me that pastels also don't work, but she gave a good reason: my skin is too pale for them. I'd never heard it put like that, but that actually makes a lot of sense. Having a model on hand for fashion advice can be handy sometimes.
And since when did a train go near by house? I just heard one outside. Huh. Must have been the Amtrak (which annoyingly no longer runs quickly between here and Springfield, but that's another rant for another day) out of Back Bay station. Didn't realize that it was that close, I'll have to check that out later.
