So when we went down to town today I saw I had a voicemail message on my cell phone (I do not get enough reception at the house to actually check it) but once we got far enough down the hill I called it, and got a message I'd been dreading.
On Wednesday Ryu died while she was at the vet's office. I'm still in shock over it. I'll have to wait until Monday when they're open to call the vet and get the full story, but apparently she took a turn for the worse during the day and died around 8pm. The message they left on Thursday only showed up in my voicemail box today because there's sometimes a delay on them, and even though I thought I'd left them the house number because of the lack of service they only called my cell phone. It irritates me, but it's not like it would have made a difference in saving her since it was apparently really quick.
I can only guess at what happened at this point, but at least it sounds like the infections she had didn't go away. I already knew they were tough but had kept medicating her as instructed by the MSPCA vet, and the vet in Weymouth had agreed to keep it up. It's also possible that Ryu was as old as 11 or 12, which is elderly by leopard gecko standards, because we can't pin down exactly how old she was, but that may mean that she was simply too old to fight it off.
Needless to say I feel terrible, but she was in the best place I could find for her, and it at least sounds like there was nothing we could have done.
But here's one of the better photos I have of her, which dates back to 2005, when I think I'd already had her for a few years:
