Caved in and got Mass Effect
May. 14th, 2011 04:39 pmSo I finally caved and bought the first Mass Effect after I'd heard a lot about it and was interested, and so far I like it. I'd never actually played a Bioware RPG, though I watched Angelo play Knights of the Old Republic at one point, but that doesn't count.
One thing you can do is customize how your character looks, so here's mine.

Yeah. I swear I didn't intend that, and it was only later that I went "Wait... pale redhead with green eyes OH SON OF A--" This is what happens when you're a nerd, your interests intersect unintentionally. I think some Captain Janeway wound up in her appearance too, which would make sense since I loved Janeway when I was a kid and that turned out to be one of the early clues about me being gay. Interestingly I really didn't care much about Seven of Nine despite the fact that she was supposed to be the hot one.
Another part of this RPG is a sort of "moral choice" system that lets you choose what to say and what actions to take, with the two axis being Paragon and Renegade. Basically, Goody Two Shoes and Total Douchebag respectively. Me being me I've mostly gone the Paragon route, though early when I was playing I made a choice that I thought would just keep someone there so I could keep talking to him, mainly saying "You're not going anywhere", but the game interpreted that as me shooting them in cold blood. Oy. I then loaded it from the last save point and redid it since I did not intend to do that. Though the good part about the Goody Two Shoes route is that you can convince thugs that they're better off finding another job rather than get into a firefight, which considering how often I die during the combat parts is a very good thing.

Trying Moscato + assorted foodie stuff
May. 14th, 2011 09:46 pmThe other day one of D's friends brought over a bottle of Barefoot Moscato, and they offered me a small amount. I don't usually do white whine or sweet tasting alcohol, but I really liked this one, so today I bought myself a bottle. It was only $8, but it's pretty good for the price. I'm not too up on my wine terminology, but it has a nice little pop to it.
The bottle said it went well with Asian cuisine, and I tried that with a stir fry, and I think it went very well. It also goes with cheeses so I had some crackers and Vermont sharp cheddar, and that was very nice.
Plus, I got to add the bottle to the wine rack I got last Christmas, so now it has two bottles, this one and a red wine that I should probably finish off either by drinking it or using it in something I cook, but I drink alcohol so rarely that it just winds up sitting around. At least it looks nice since it sits on the windowsill and helps add to the image that adults live here.
Yup, living in this part of Boston almost inevitably turns people into foodies.
I also put together what I need for a pulled pork sandwich tomorrow, which I'll put in the slow cooker while I'm out during the day so it'll be ready when I get back. I decided to let the pork sit in the sauce I made overnight to give it even more flavor. I also felt like a dope because I thought we didn't have any cumin and kept meaning to get some but forgetting, but when I was cleaning the cabinet out after Angelo moved out I discovered we had some all along! So I'm actually making it according to the recipe this time (though I cut down on the chili powder because I'm a wimp).
