I had a random thought when wandering around after school today: What if gravity and destiny are fundementally the same principle?

Gravity is defined as such: "the tendency of objects with mass to accelerate toward each other" While destiny is: "the inevitable course of events, the irresistible power or agency that determines the future, whether in general or of an individual."

Sounds similar to me. One basic idea of gravity is that if it goes up, it must come down. Destiny employs the same concept, that at some point a certain chain of events must be brought together and then a certain action will take place. But, I don't believe Destiny is absolute or the event itself, merely the end result. So say you have a ball that you throw into the air. Things may alter the course of the ball, such as wind, alien invasion, what have you, but it has to come to a halt (either be caught or hit the ground) at some point. Thus, I think the original defintion of destiny is incorrect in that destiny is not the course of events, but the result.

In Norse mythology the concept of being able to delay destiny is at the very root of the apocalypse myth or Ragnarok, since Odin knows he must take part in a battle that will destroy and eventually rebuild the world, but is hesitant to actually begin. Hence he tries to prevent the different "points" that are required to have Ragnarok, and does so by trying to protect his son, whose death is the last of the required points. This seems to conjure the idea of gravity, that while measures can be taken to delay something, ultimately it has to conclude and the ball must hit the ground at some point.

This can also tie into a theory presented by people who claim clairvoyance, that the future is not static. However, it may be possible to see certain outcomes due to the nature of gravity and destiny. For instance, there could be a branching point at points A and B that are different actions, but the result may be the same.

The things I think about on rainy days... Meh.

Ever considered writting a book, because that is absolutely brilliant! I definetely see the comparison between the two ideas here, although I admit I didn't entierly at first. It really is a fascinating comparison though. ^_^

Thank you! I'm glad to know that makes sense to someone besides me. Who knows, I might decide to compile stuff in a book one day, god knows there's enough spinning around in my head to fill onr (or six...)
