I think I've heard about that. The "six to eight black men" who follow Santa around who used to slaves but are now his "friends"? Now that would get Americans upset.

I don't think he (or they - but originally there was just one) was ever supposed to be a literal slave. More like a personal servant to a bishop, or like Friday to Robinson Crusoe - technically not a slave but in practice not very different.

Maybe it wasn't the Netherlands that had that Santa -- but I do remember reading about the "six to eight black men" Santa took with him in a book set somewhere in Europe. There was also something about how this Santa actually beats up bad kids.

Yeah, I think trying to make up for past "mistakes" only makes it worse and just denies history. This sort of thing is the reason that being PC is very low on my priority list.
