Picked up Gunslinger Girl volume 6 yesterday, and man... That series really taps into the pathos of the reader, and that's why I find it so intriguing.

So far I'm impressed by the way the author's introduced Petrushka, since he's avoided turning her into a Mary Sue. I think part of it is the way he makes sure that just about everything about her is slightly unsettling. I'm also impressed by how the author avoids doing anything specifically fanservice-oriented (for instance, there's been exactly one pantyshot in the entire series, in chapter 1) and even the scene of Petrushka's handler "checking out" her new body isn't played in a sexual light.

I'm not sure where he's going with the Alessandro/Petrushka relationship, but it wouldn't surprise me if he pushes it in a direction he hasn't taken the other handler/girl relationships yet (IE there seems to be at least some level of attraction from him to her, though once again it's being played as unsettling more than anything else). I'll be interested to see how he handles this.

In related news, I've managed to get a few more chapters of the [livejournal.com profile] 30_wounds challenge out, and on FF.net I've gotten a few followers who comment just about with each one. A couple I'm not satisfied with (and neither are the readers) but the entire thing's a learning experience in the first place, and overall I've happy with it. It's certainly unlike anything else I've ever done.
