athenaltenaI finally managed to watch and finish all of Mnemosyne, the sort of yuri series that takes cues from The Terminator and Paradise Lost. Though I winced several times in it I enjoyed it overall, though there was one little thing that made my blood boil...
Oh goddamit Xebec why did you have to do the old bait and switch lesbians trick with Rin at the end?! I understand it had a story element to it, but it still felt like "Ha ha we're going to tease you about her sexuality and Oh look a guy who's her true love!" *throws something* I hate it when they do that. Even though I guess there's some potential for it after the series... Agh.
That aside Rin certainly is a different sort of anime lead that I hope we see more of. Not only is she well dressed *coughWomenInSuitsFetishcough* but she has character beyond just her looks and speaks in a realistic voice, and as one person pointed out it's one of the few roles Mamiko Noto has had that aren't these breathy bishoujo voices. It does help that she kicks a lot of ass while doing her job, too, and doesn't just become helpless with captured. It's nice to see a woman taking care of herself, even if she does cheat a bit by being immortal.
Still... that ending had me hitting the wall a bit. Agh. Simoun, on the other hand, managed to end decently and not torpedo the yuri pairings, and actually kept one of them around. Permanently. I was very happy. I'm also generally impressed with that series and the way it managed to have the yuri not just be fanservice, but actually have it ingrained into the plot and part of the character's psychologies. They even managed to get a yaoi couple in, for chrissakes, so I think it's pretty obvious that the main theme of that show is love, period. :)
