I didn't think I'd be busing out this icon any time soon, but now I have a reason to!

Last week as the Arlington St. Church I got into a conversation with two guys named Paul and Sean during the "coffee hour" after the service, though there it's much more of a meal with soup and sandwiches and all that (this week it was free but most times there's a donation required) and it turned out they were looking for people to help out this week, so I volunteered with those two guys to help out the two people who usually do it (including one who makes fantastic soup).

Though I got there later than I was planning due to having trouble waking up they put me to work setting up the stuff for the lunch, and a few minutes before the end of the service we all went down to start grilling up the grilled cheese. It was a bit crazy since those sandwiches were going really fast and we were having to do 5 or 6 at a time in one pan, but everyone told us they were very good, and we managed to snap some for ourselves too, proving that things always taste much better when you've made it). Granted, it's hard to screw up a grilled cheese sandwich, but still...

We then did the lengthy cleanup, washing, and drying dishes, which managed to be fun too, and then it turns out that next week they're going to have a huge bake sale that they need people to cook for, so of course I volunteered again to help out next Saturday morning in baking all sorts of stuff.

One thing I miss about having access to my own cooking facilities is the ability to make stuff, even though I don't do it too often and it's usually not too complex (unless I'm trying to make soba or something). But now that I don't have that option I kind of miss it, and as much as I'm grateful to the people who run our food service I sometimes wish I could just make something without having to get permission to use the two kitchens they have here, which are almost always signed out and frankly aren't very nice. Today when I was doing it I was reminded that I find doing it to be very zen, and that because I'm such a detail nut it's also really really fun.

So who knows, I might make this a regular part of my week. ;)
