Awkward Sociology Moment
Feb. 5th, 2008 04:31 pmToday in Sociology the teacher had us do an exercise that involved writing down on a slip of paper something about us that wasn't immediately obvious. I put down the first thing that came to mind, which was naturally enough "I am gay". I figured she'd just read them back and have us raise our hands. Wrong.
She then passed them out to the rest of the class, with the idea being that we have to find the person whose paper we got. At which point I did this (silently):
Oh noooooooo! 'Д'
Once we were allowed to go out and try to find the people, I found the person who had mine fairly quickly and apologized for creating such an awkward question, since even though Greenfield is fairly liberal asking "Are you gay?" is still like asking for a punch to the face with some people. The person laughed it off and said I was very brave, albeit by accident. It wasn't so much that I was afraid of outing myself (quite the opposite) but I didn't want to make it awkward for the person who got mine.
So yeah, oops. When I told the people at my table about that they laughed, though all of them were in my English class last semester and hadn't guessed (which was odd, since we had several queer people in that class, though I was considerably less talkative about some stuff related to that than them *clears throat*). I guess it really isn't that obvious. Hmm.
