Night of the Living Alarms
Dec. 14th, 2009 11:45 amGood Lord, last night was interesting.
After staying home from church yesterday I gave Krys a call around 4 and had him come over, and I made home-made garlic bread and pasta and we watched a Discovery Channel show about dinosaurs, since everyone loves dinosaurs. That was good, but then the fire alarm went off and we had to go outside. In the rain. Luckily there was no fire and the firemen showed up quickly to confirm that some idiot had just burnt their dinner.
But then, oh then, the alarm itself needed to be turned off by someone from the management company, and it took them 40 minutes to show up, the entirety of which we had to deal with this thing shrieking in our ears since nobody wanted to stand outside for that long in the rain. My ears were ringing for a good 10 minutes after on top of a hell of a headache.
But it got worse. As I'm going to bed I hear this beeping in the apartment across the hall, and it turns out that an alarm in that apartment is going off, and the tenants have already left for break! This thing too was loud enough that I couldn't get any sleep, so I called the management company again (I'd also called about the fire alarm just to make sure we didn't have a diffusion of responsibility situation where everyone assumes that someone else took care of it). But it got even worse, since the only maintenance guy they could get hold of was an hour away and driving back into Boston. This, by the way, happened at 1 in the morning.
Eventually it did get turned off. I'm not sure when exactly since I had industrial strength earplugs, borrowed from Nadia, in my ears so I could at least get some sleep, but it was turned off and nobody's dead/in the hospital, so apparently it was a low battery or something.
Did I mention that all this happened the night before I had to take two finals?! Yeah, something up there just loves to screw with me. Couldn't make this up if I tried.
