Finally got around to watching Gunslinger Girl ~ Il Teatrino and I think someone on My Anime List.org just about summed up my general view of it:

If you're watching GSG as an action show, stop watching it now, because you've missed the point.

So far a lot of people have been bitching about the animation and the changes from the first season as done by Mad House, and for the most part I've been rolling my eyes at that. Yup, they've missed the point indeed if they're only there for the bloody fights and killer lolis.

That said, the new season manages to deliver what I feel are the best parts of the manga, mainly the deeply disturbing bits and the psychological mindfuckery. Mainly, the scene in episode 1 of Henrietta sneaking into Jose's room and hugging his shirt managed to pull off just the right balance of cute and creepy.

I also have to disagree with the people saying that Henrietta's voice is too chirpy -- on the contrary, I thought that Yuuka Nanri in the original season didn't put enough emotion into Henrietta and ended up sound flat a good part of the time. I think this animation style also manages to put more expression into the girl's faces, since another thing that bothered me about the Mad House version was that the girls looked overly-zombified and wooden. I've only seen one episode of it so far, but I think some people need to relax before declaring it to be "butchered" -- after all, Yu Aida himself is having a lot of input on this season, so that complaint doesn't hold water.

I'm looking forward to the Triela/Pinnochio fight, and I just hope the animation studio is taking shortcuts now so they can deliver later. Or maybe I'm just an optimist. :P
