Maybe I'm showing my New England stripes, but all the fuss about the (admittedly shitton) of snow is "Bah, so what?" Not much impresses me when it comes to snow after Petrozavodsk, Russia in February. It is cool watching it pile up outside the window, and this is only round 1 of 2, and tomorrow is going to royally kick our asses.

It was pretty funny when I got to work today and one guy came out of the bathroom (my desk is right in front of the men's room) when I was taking off my coat and said "You actually came in? You're brave!" because it was such a mess out there and the T is backed up as all get out. But considering I'm in walking distance and I have decent boots with good treads I don't really have an excuse, and I did have a class this morning.

What was even funnier is a little later when I called someone his reaction was to wonder just how I managed to get to work since I was in Boston, and my answer was again that I walked. Hey, I'm tougher than I look. >:)

heh heh, I was out in this mess earlier myself...unfortunetly Attleboro isn't as urbanized as Boston and walking home from Stop and Shop in the freezing rain and snow was oh so much fun when I tried to keep myself from being hit by a car or a truck.
But hey I made it back and I have food in my house.
And no I couldn't take a taxi because the local taxi service had shut down.

I forgot to mention it in the post proper, but I nearly got hit by a plow on the way home. The snowbank was so tall that he couldn't see me, and of course the sidewalk wasn't plowed so I had to be in the street. Luckily he realized I was there, slammed on the brakes, and waved an apology. Some of the banks in the North End are so tall that one friend of mine is shorter than most of the.

How are people holding up, on average? I can imagine being out in the traffic is mildly life-threatening when people aren't used to so much snow.

We're doing alright, and we're not exactly unused to snow in these parts, though usually not this much in such a short period of time.

That's something, at least. I heard it was being described as Snowmageddon and whatnot (then again, the media exaggerates everything), so it seems like people overall are having a bit of trouble.

Yeah, I honestly don't think this is that bad. I remember some snowstorms where the snow was over my head (granted, I was a kid) and at least in the neck of the woods where my parents live they've kept their power on. The real worst one was the ice storm a few years ago that left us without power the better part of a week (to rub salt in the wound, it hit the same day I got home for Winter Break) because the ice on the trees was so heavy snapped the trees apart and took out power lines and blocked roads, and all through the night it sounded like artillery fire going off. So snow is one thing, ice is quite another.

Hear, hear about the ice vs snow thing. Good to know it's not as bad as it could have been.

Walking out on the street when the sidewalks are caked in snow isn't very fun.
The amount we're getting and the timing does remind me of the Blizzard of '78 though

And after doing some reading up on that event, jikes, that's quite a lot of snow. Hopefully people are being careful.

I can understand that it is. If other people can't manage their cars in that kind of weather it doesn't matter how used to snow you yourself are, after all.

All too true. Anyhow, like I told [livejournal.com profile] athenaltena, I hope the weather will make a turn for the better for you guys soon.

Actually today up here wasn't bad (i.e. it wasn't snowing or even cloudy)

None of the sidewalks around here are plowed. Today, the place I was supposed to work at was closed. The snow banks are tall at the end of the street, the people fly down that road, and I have to be careful not to be hit.

At my main job, they finally got someone that knows how to plow. The previous contractor did not know how to remove snow and we lost a lot of parking.

One thing about Boston is that they're pretty good about clearing the sidewalks, what they don't do consistently is clear the area in front of the crosswalks, which more or less forces you to walk on the road in some spots because you can't get through to the sidewalk without wading through six inches of slush. I think it's because the plows push snow up there that they don't get around to clearing again.
